When comparing sauna tents, sooner or later you will come across designations like 210D, 300D, and 420D. But what do these numbers actually mean, and do they matter to you as a buyer?
D stands for Denier
Denier is a measure of the thickness and weight of the yarn. The higher the number, the thicker the yarn and the heavier the fabric. It is a measure of the material's density, not directly of quality. A high D number is neither good nor bad in itself; it entirely depends on what the fabric is used for. And this is where it gets interesting when it comes to sauna tents.
210D
The lightest option, and often the cheapest. 210D Oxford is thin, packable, and easy to handle, but has lower resistance to abrasion and mechanical stress compared to thicker options. It is well suited for those who value low weight and perhaps use the tent less frequently. However, for those planning regular use or permanent setup, 210D is too simple, and durability over time may suffer.
300D
The middle ground. 300D Oxford is robust enough to withstand weather, wind, and repeated use, while not adding unnecessary weight to your pack. An advantage that is rarely mentioned is the surface: 300D often has a matte, more refined finish that gives the tent a sleeker and more minimalist look compared to thicker fabric. For those who value both portability and aesthetics, it is a well-balanced choice.
420D
The heaviest of the three. 420D Oxford has thicker yarn, higher weight, and good resistance to abrasion and mechanical wear. It is a material that performs well in tough conditions where durability outweighs everything else. In a sauna tent, this means a heavier pack and a coarser surface texture, without the material’s full strength necessarily being fully utilized. This is worth considering if portability and aesthetics are important to you.
Which D number suits you?
It depends on how you use your sauna tent. If you carry it often to different locations and value a nice finish, the choice matters a lot. If the tent mostly stays in the same place and price is the most important factor, the differences are less decisive in practice.
The most important thing is that you understand what you are comparing, so you can choose based on your own priorities, not just what sounds most impressive. We chose 300D for Flamman and Gnistan precisely because it hits the mark for the type of use we designed the tents for.
