Regularly sweeping the chimney of your sauna stove is important for both safety and performance. If soot builds up, the risk increases that glowing particles will leave the chimney and can damage the tent and surroundings.
However, sweeping doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.
The easiest way is to use a regular toilet brush.
Buy a cheap toilet brush and extend the handle by taping on a stick or dowel. This way, you can reach all the way through the chimney pipe.
Disassemble the chimney parts and then push the brush down through each section several times, all the way through. The soot that loosens will fall down, so do this outdoors to avoid soot inside.
Done!
This is sufficient for regular maintenance between more thorough sweepings, especially if you sauna often and use wood of varying quality.
A clean chimney provides better draft, more even heat, and above all, a safer sauna experience.
